Castle Bolton Village in Wensleydale The first houses to be built close to Bolton Castle in Wensleydale, were for the retinue of Mary Queen of Scots, during her imprisonment in the Castle. Additional, similar stone built houses have been added more recently, but the village, named after the castle still has a small population of only 50 or 60 people. St Oswald's Church, in Castle Bolton, Wensleydale There was a church here from the 12th Century and the present building still predates Bolton Castle by about 70 years. Apparently Mary Queen of Scots attended services at St Oswald's during her imprisonment in the castle standing just a few yards away. This picture appears in the following picture tours: |
