Portchester castle, near Portsmouth East wall of the castle and the bay. Portsdown hill is in the distance, the white you can see is the chalk pit, this was excavated for many years for its lime....it also built the causeway to Horsea island that now serves Port Solent. Portchester castle, near Portsmouth This Roman fort is apparently the best preserved example in Europe. In the Napoleonic war it served as a prison and has been the subject of at least one major archeological dig, I think in the early seventies.
