The Winnings, Welbeck

The Winnings, Welbeck

Almshouses for retired Estate workers, who had no families. They were built with money that the 5th Duke had won with some of his race horses, hence the name. The names of the winning horses are listed on the rectangular stone at the front of the building. I can only remember one : "Semolina". My good old Raleigh bike is also in the picture .

Incorporating the old Welbeck Estates Gas Works (lower part of the building on the left) the former Lime Shed (just visible at the opposite edge of the picture) and the foundations of the gasometers . They were turned into a pond and an amphitheatre. Brilliant and imaginative conversion by the architect Leo Godlewsky.
