St Andrews Church, Alfriston, East Sussex 1986

St Andrews Church, Alfriston, East Sussex 1986

St Andrews Church, Alfriston dates from 1360 and has been nicknamed the Cathedral of the South Downs. Fun to compare this photo from 1986 with John Pelling's photo taken twenty years later in 2006. Only the bench has moved onto the village green and the rubbish bin has gone!

Shops in the Market Square, Alfriston 1986

Shops in the Market Square, Alfriston 1986

The market cross in this square was erected in the early 15th century and is one of only two remaining market crosses in Sussex. Compare with Andrew Huggett's photo from 2006 twenty years later, unfortunately I can't make out if the shops are still the same, but remember we had a really good cream tea at the Singing Kettle
