Aground Littlehaven Beach, South Shields, Tyne and Wear. 16/3/11 Picture shows the Clonlee a 4,000 ton cargo vessel with 12 crew which ran aground at Littlehaven beach near the Groyne on the above date. Tug is attempting to free the ship on the high tide after it lost power in very foggy conditions. Two tugs are moored near Mill Dam on the south side of the river while opposite a DFDS Seaways Ferry is waiting for passengers at North Shields. Woodhalve Lifeboat & Monument William Woodhave Lifeboat & Monument, Ocean Road, South Shields, Tyne & Wear. 10/02/11 Invented and originally built in the 17th century this lifeboat is a replica. The world's first lifeboat was invented by William Woodhalve of South Shields and is the forerunner of all lifeboats today.The first lifeboat was named 'Tyne' and along with the brave men who sailed her saved many lives.
