Burnley, Lancashire The 'Singing Ringing Tree' is one of four 'panopticon' artworks located within Pennine Lancashire. A panopticon is defined as a structure, space or device which allows a panoramic view. This one is to be found at Crown Point, high on the moors overlooking the town of Burnley. The 'tree' is a three metre tall musical sculpture designed to represent a natural wind blown tree such as a hawthorn, often seen in moorland. The galvanised steel pipes catch the westerly winds and produce an eerie melodic sound, which is said to be most effective in a moderate breeze rather than a strong wind. The sculpture was designed by architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Lui. The idea behind these artworks is to attract people into the countryside to enjoy the landscapes.
