Clitheroe, Lancashire

The River Ribble from Edisford Bridge, which is located about a mile west of Clitheroe Castle. Edisford, which means 'the Nobleman's Ford' was the scene of an 1139 battle when King David of Scotland's army fought and defeated the much outnumbered Lancastrians. The Ribble is the only river rising in Yorkshire which flows westward; it flows through Settle, Clitheroe and Preston before reaching the Irish Sea between Lytham St Anne's and Southport with a total length of 75 miles.
