Dover Lifeboat 'RNLB City of London II'. Dover lifeboat 'RNLB City of London II', seen here moored close to the Dover Lifeboat Station, is a Severn Class lifeboat in service since 1997 and named after the longest river in Britain. The small building to the left of the clock tower in the background is the original lifeboat station dating back to the 1800's. A total of 46 of these boats were built at a cost of £2m each. Dover lifeboats have been saving lives at sea since 1837 and received over 30 awards for gallantry since that time. Solitary Boat on Dover Beach, Kent A solitary fishing boat sits on the pebbles of Shakespeare Beach, Dover, Kent. The cliff in background is known as 'Shakespeare Cliff', so called as it is said to have inspired a passage from Shakespeare’s King Lear; Shakespeare was a frequent visitor to Dover at the time of writing it.
