That's The Measure Of The Cornish Coast

That's The Measure Of The Cornish Coast

A view of the Atlantic coast from the cliff top above the Crowns Engine Houses down below near the crashing waves. I must thank Pat for the pics of trig pillars in the past but for once I have taken one myself. The view here looks to the south in the direction of Cape Cornwall and Land's End.

The Other Side of the Crowns.

The Other Side of the Crowns.

I have moved from the previous shot of the Crowns and walked down to them and gone round the back of them to look back and take the shot. I have a framed print of this location showing how the site would have looked in it's heyday. The print's view is taken from a few yards further round the cliff but self preservation kicked in as I was not keen on the state path beyond the viewpoint you can see- pic of the print for an informative view of the past to follow.

Nampara

Nampara

This is Botallack Manor Farm not so far from The Crowns , the tin and copper mines on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Botallack Manor Farm is a grade 11* listed building, but millions of people will know it as "Nampara". This was the home of Ross Poldark in the original series of Poldark from the mid 70's with Robin Ellis as Ross. I do not know if it still is but around 1993 my wife and myself stayed there when it was a B&B, a a wonderful place it was as well.

The Crowns

The Crowns

I make no apology for uploading a shot of The Crowns tin and copper mine, perhaps one of the most photographed mines in Kernow. The Crowns was responsible for 22,465 tons of copper, 14,888 tons of tin and 1,525 tons of arsenic. Arsenic was a by-product of hard rock mining for tin and copper, the spoil being baked in the calciners and then the arsenic was scrapped by hand from the walls and ceiling of the calciner- the only protection being a handkerchief tied across the face of the workers. 1863 saw a disaster where 8 men and 1 boy were killed travelling in the tram wagon when the chain broke sending it hurtling down Boscawen Diagonal Shaft. The Crowns were visited by Albert and Vctoria in 1846 and in 1865 the then Duke and Duchess of Cornwall actually descended the mine. The shafts and tunnels of the mine go down and out under the Atlantic ocean in their search for the ore.
