The Monkey House- Portreath Here is a close up of the original "Monkey House" , my full text can be found on POE pic no. 1185614. The structure was finally destroyed in storms on 06/01/2014- my shot was taken in May 2013. I have visited Portreath earlier this year and a new " Monkey House" has already been built and work I believe continues on other parts of the harbour damaged at the same time. The new building has been whitewashed and I did take a couple of shots but alas only in general scenes and not at all close up to compare, ( pretty poor photographic practice I say- we learn by our mistakes. THERE IT WAS GONE A little piece of Kernow has been taken today ! The blockhouse at the end of the harbour pier that has been there for years has been swallowed by the sea today. Sometimes known as the monkey house the building at the end of the pier was a shelter for the harbour pilot in times of rough seas but today it was taken by the sea itself. Portreath harbour in the 18th century was a major port for the mining industry exporting the hard won tin and copper from the large deposits in Cornwall and for the import of precious coal for the many beam engines as Cornwall does not have any coal of it's own.
