Pendennis Castle In The Line Of Fire We can see Pendennis Castle on the headland on the other side of the entrance to Carrick Roads only it seems the cannon of St Mawes Castle have eye on the castle with ill intent. Also in shot are the Garrison Barracks on the far right and the building with the large aerial is the Falmouth Coastguard Station. The Guns of St Mawes Castle As we all know the Castle at St Mawes was built by Henry VIII ( well not by his own hand but at his order ) as part of the defence of England's Southern Coast against invasion from across the English Channel. There were many Castles built between here in Cornwall right round to the ports of Kent and they were built to a design of consentric bastions which made for a strong fortification of the times- from the air they also have the look of a Tudor Rose !! St Mawes Castle guards the entrance to Carrick Roads, the third largest natural harbour in the world here at Falmouth. On the other side of the entrance to this natural harbour another of Henry's castles stands at Pendennis Point defending the Falmouth side. But I hear you ask , why build two castles so close ? Simple answer is that cannon of the day only had a range that could not reach the other side - hence the need for two castles. Castle Garden. St. Mawes Castle taken from the grounds and it is the plants against the building that caught my eye. I reckon the wind has played a part in shaping the bush in the shot. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
St Mawes Castle - the sea view. The heavy clouds break enough to get a sunny shot of St Mawes Castle as we pass by on the Enterprise. The castle was built by Henry VIII as part of the defence against the French. The Castle protects Carrick Roads along with Pendennis Castle on the other side of the entrance at Falmouth. I am not sure if it is true but I am sure there had to be a castle on both sides of the entrance as a canon fired from one side would not fire a great enough distance to reach the other side, so castles were built both sides to give full protection.
