A Touch of the Autumnals Winter is getting closer as some of the trees are now turning their leafs to bright yellows and golds with hints of rust colours. Soon the leafs- they will all fall leaving us with bare trees and -- hey why am I getting all poetical ? I am not keen on this time of year! The Quiet Corner Kennel Lane Recreation ground in Fetcham has a school near to the more elevated end along with the usual football. On the other side of the tree line break in the grass is a set of swings slides and so on plus a zip wire, but carry on down to the bottom of the grassed area and the edge of the rec in the far corner is this very quiet and sheltered by small trees and shrubs is a small pond . One can only get to about a third of the edge of the pond and that has a small fence for safety reasons . Mist-ery Lane While a lot of folk last night were braving the wee hours to capture the supermoon in eclipse the best I could manage was a shot in the misty conditions of the sunrise well after all the celestial events. The misty conditions do help to create what is a bit of a mist-ery of what lies ahead. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Panasonic Model: DMC-TZ60 |
I am not as tall as I should be ! Well the stem has produced a bud to turn into a sunflower albeit rather late in the season. Problem is the stem is about 3 foot high and other sunflower heads that have opened are only about 3 inches across whereas I was expecting stems taller than the 6 foot fence and heads over 6 inches wide- oh well, at least it has grown as all the other seeds sown not in this pot did not do a thing. OK? It is not a meringue- so what is it? Answers on a post card please as they say. I guess it is some sort of fungi taking residence, but would like to know what it might be. It is two separate pieces growing close to each other and about 6 or 7 inches wide for each piece. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. The Hopper and the Sunflower All attempts at growing some sunflowers have been a failure and this is as far as any have got and now this pic taken at the end of August I reckon not much else is going to happen. They had the droops after our recent downpours and in giving them some support I found this little character exploring one of the heads, since then I have seen quite a number of grasshoppers in different places. I have one concern- when I look at this I am reminded of the strange creatures found in London's Underground in that classic movie " Quatermass and the Pit " This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Panasonic Model: DMC-TZ60 |
Blowing in the Wind Another shot from my wait in vain for Spitfire and or Hurricanes flying over the house as they have been doing recently. Testing out new toy had shot at this rose blowing in the breeze using full zoom - equivalent of 720mm. Was a bit surprised it was not a blurred pink blob. The Search For Nectar A quick hand held shot whilst in the garden waiting in vain, for a number of weeks now we have had quite a lot of overflies by either Spitfires or Hurricanes. I do not know where they are coming from or going to but they seem to be quite frequent and always on a more or less East West track or vice versa. So there I am waiting in hope but they only seem to appear when camera is not to hand so you will just have to make do with this little flying machine. New Thatch A place I pass on the way to work is having an extension and being an already thatched house the new bit is having a thatched roof from scratch. It has been interesting over the last few days seeing the thatch roof take shape but still has some more work before it is done. I have not seen the craftsmen at work but just the roof growing day by day and it is good to see an old skill still in use. The Perils Of The Bird Feeder It is the back garden and I have a mini cornfield growing courtesy of the sparrows at the bird feeder- they are so messy ! I have removed the feeder as there was so much going everywhere and I did not want unwelcome visitors with all the seed on the ground . I have cleared the mess but not before a few dozen heads of corn started to grow, so I have left what had set seed just to see what happens. I do not think I will be setting up a baker's though. I have put a vignette on the pic just to hide a bit of distracting foliage. This picture appears in the following picture tour: |
Little Landscape Just a fun shot taken in the garden, in what you see is in the sink! The aloe in flower in my earlier shot is top left out of shot but in shot this time are just some small pansy type flower ( not sure what, they just helped themselves and took up residence- kinda flora squatters I suppose ) . The purple flowers are only out in the sunshine and they are Mesembryanthemum and I think I might have got the spelling a bit better this time. Fox On The Block The local fox family are still around and I have seen three at least. One does not hang around and first sight of a human with a glass eye and it is gone, whereas this one just keeps an eye on you which does give you a chance for a portrait or two. Aloe Aloe, What's All This Then? The clue is in the title, this is an aloe and in flower ( normally only seen as a rosette of succulent leaves close to the ground ). This one grows outside and is hardly tended, it is in concrete sink with some thrift, campanulla , sempervivium and mesembreanthiums - bit of a mixture I know. I just throw a bit of water on the sink when the weather is like it is now. Some of the pods has have burst and some of the seeds from the pod explosion have stuck on itself while others will have shot away and some day another aloe will say 'ello. Sorry if I might have got a few mis-spells back there- all written with no cross checking tonight. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
Population Explosion Sorry if there any arachnopbics looking in but this little group was only about an inch across but disturb the foliage and they spread out, but bunched back up after a short while. I have no idea what sort of spider they are or how many will survive the wilds of my back garden. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Panasonic Model: DMC-TZ25 |
Did Someone Call ? Probably not the same fox we had around previous years but this character seems to be the latest fox-on-the-block. Getting a shot has not been too difficult as it just stands or sits where it is and does not run off unless one gets very close. It is nice to see them around for photography purposes but on the other hand it is not so good having them scavenging about. Gotcha ! After a while taking pics of the local wildlife managed this shot right through a tree to the other side, will not be possible to do that soon once the leafs open. We manage to attract a number of different birds to our feeder and the sparrows have for the most numbers. ( Yes we did take part in the RSPB Birdwatch ) This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
CAN I HAVE SOME MORE PLEASE ? We seem to have a new fox on the block and as usual does not seem to have much fear of us here. I was out filling the bird feeders this morning only to turn round and Mr.Fox was standing there, however all cameras were indoors and the fox was between me and the house. That was a bit too much so the fox slipped off only to return a few mins later and hung around to grab a shot, unfortunately the focus is not quite there but the expression on the face is. 'Tis Bad Manners How many times have I told you ? DO NOT sit in your dinner !!! Well I suppose it does not show if you spill any. Just make sure you do not make a pig of yourself- maybe a bit tricky with a fluffy tail like that ! This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
It's That Robin Again Looking all innocent on the fence, I wonder what he would be like if another robin came into his garden. This picture appears in the following picture tour: Camera Make: Canon Model: Canon EOS 550D |
