This Way Children !!!

This Way Children !!!

Back at Silent Pool but this time on the Sherbourne Pond we see a new family of coots on the water. Whilst I was there one of the littl'uns got somewhat tangled in some surface weed, some others visiting there before me said it had been caught up for at least a quarter of an hour and it was out of reach to help in any way. After a while and some vain struggles the mum came over and the other people there said that she gave the trapped little one some food and swam off- next thing toddler is free and chasing after her. A happy ending for you all. I do not think these young coots are going to win any beauty contests soon.

Silent Pool - Before and After

A picture of Silent Pool similar to a previous post, for those not aware of the history please see previous uploads for history and legends of the Pool. The purpose of this shot is for demonstration purposes to be viewed on the "Circular Polarisers " thread found in the forums. Take a look , there loads of threads to see in the forums.

Watching You Watching Me

Watching You Watching Me

A Ha !! Got a sheep to share, some others seem to like sheep so here is one taken just a few yards from the Sherebourne Pond. There was only four or five with quite a fair patch of grass for them to munch. It does seem to have a beady eye though, starred at me the whole time I was there.

The Organic Vineyard

The Organic Vineyard

Just next door to the Silent Pool is a modern day vineyard and I would guess where the grapes were grown all those centuries ago. I believe there is a range of wines produced here.

Clarity and Reflections

Clarity and Reflections

This shot of the Silent Pool demonstrates just how clear the water is. In my info of the Silent Pool on previous upload I did not tell the whole story, what I missed off is the story today ! The young maiden Emma who drowned in the Pool because of the actions of Prince/King John is still there to this day. Apparently at midnight she can be seen floating on the water and/or her screams can be heard, not been there at that time of day to confirm but do know someone who saw a spectre there during the day.

Happy Motoring

Happy Motoring

As a follow up to a recent shot posted by Brian of a old motorcycle at Newlands Corner, I saw this old motor off on it's way after a refreshment stop. I am sorry to say I do not know what it is but did overhear the owner say it has a two litre engine and with only three wheels is none the less very stable to drive.

Sherbourne Pond

Sherbourne Pond

Right I shall try again- forgot to take the pic to below 8mb. Sherbourne Pond dates from the 1600s (later than the Silent Pool) and is indeed fed from the Silent Pool. It was dug out to form a pond to serve some fountains, the grinding of corn, the village of Albury and to irrigate a vineyard. There is a vineyard still in the area today and promotes itself as an "organic" vineyard. I have seen pictures in the past of this pond with a small boathouse but today I could see no sign of it.

Silent Pool

Silent Pool

Silent Pool is just down the road (A25) from Newlands Corner near to the village of Albury. The water of Silent Pool is pure and clear coming straight from a spring in a chalk landscape and the temperature of the water remains at 10 or 11 degrees all year round. It gets it's name from the quiet and eerie atmosphere that is found there, in fact it is said to be haunted. Emma , thedaughter of a woodcutter liked to swim naked in the Silent Pool but when a horseman came near once she screamed as she swam to the deeper part of the pond. Her brother came to her cries but it was the following morning that the woodcutter found both the bodies of his children AND the hat of the horseman lost in his flight- it bore the crest of Prince John, later to become the infamous King John.

Is he ok?

Is he ok?

I think this could be a chaffinch but please correct me if I am wrong. However, I am concerned that he/she has an issue with it's legs and claws. The legs looked unusual and could have something wrong, other than that the bird looks fine and was on the wing around this area which is a wildlife feeding station next to the visitor centre at Newlands Corner. Any ideas if there are any bird folk looking in?

Flying High

Flying High

Well I have returned to Newlands Corner and the kestrels are still soaring in the sky after lunch ( I think it is a kestrel and C&S reckoned my shot on the last visit was ). I have managed to get a bit closer this time but quality wise I have a long way to go yet, but this one clearly shows a bird of prey on the wing looking for prey on the ground, I did not see any diving or attacks today but they do cover a lot of ground. On this occasion there were two of them on the hunt.

Newlands View

Newlands View

Taken from the slopes at Newlands corner looking southwest we see the ridge in the distance known as Lidwell Copse. I was hoping to see on the summit The Church of St.Martha on-the-hill, however it is hidden behind the trees and a much longer walk would be required to see the church. The site has had a church/chapel there since saxon times but an explosion severely damaged the church in 1745 when an accident at a gunpowder factory further down the hill caused the damage. Re-built in !850 the church remains today , BUT there is not a road to it only a sandy track and the climb is said to take 15 minutes !! Dedication.

Newlands Corner Resident

Newlands Corner Resident

Newlands Corner has a wealth of wildlife and near the discovery centre is a corner to encourage various forms of wildlife and today seemed to be the day of the bluetit- ( I had just missed a woodpecker yet again ).

Over the Hills and Far Away

Over the Hills and Far Away

This is the outlook from Newlands Corner looking south, the light was against me so this is the best I managed today. The car park here is pretty large with a very good refreshment establishment, an information centre, mobility scooter hire (I am told ) , a wildlife station and great views. It is supposed to be one of the best spots in this area for stargazing with not perfect but as close as you will get for low light pollution in this neck of the world. AND apparently Newlands Corner was where Agatha Christie abandoned her car in December 1926. She disappeared and caused a major police hunt and was not found for a number of days. She did eventually turn up in Harrogate staying at a hotel under a different name ( that of her husbands lover ).

The Texting Squirrel.

The Texting Squirrel.

This shot was taken of a small wildlife corner at Newlands Corner and I just liked it as a squirrel shot. However, I have had this picture on the counter this week as one of the pictures of the week shots I have up each week in the shop and quite a few customers have said he looks like he is texting! Had to share it with you all.

Taken from the beauty spot of Newlands Corner looking down on the farmland below. This shot is on about 32 x zoom so not so crisp. It just looked from where I was one tractor was in a strop and driving away in a huff. However I am sure all was as it should be.
