DME/VOR

DME/VOR

Are we looking at something from a James Bond movie or something visiting UFOs left behind? No this structure is found at the far eastern end of Wisley airfield and is one of 3000 dotted around the world. It is known as the Ockham VOR and is a direction indicator for aircraft. I suppose it is like satnav, but on the ground for the aircraft up in the air. I tried to find out more for you good folk but got so bogged down by technical stuff that the information above will have to keep you going - you can make head or tail of it if you want to.

Plenty of space on the runway

Plenty of space on the runway

Like the runway some of the debris here has seen better days. Peggy asked about the airfield here at Wisley so here is a bit of information. It was built by Vickers in1944 who were working at Brooklands (the very old banked racing track) and the airfield was used for test flying many of their aircraft including the Vickers Valiant. The Valiant was of course one of the "V" bombers of the "Cold War" fame. The airfield was closed down in 1972 and much of the airfield has gone, the runway and a large apron area still remains but that is more or less it. The control tower was unusual in that it was a timber framed cottage but that too has gone. The runway is over a mile long so pictures posted could be put in Ockham, Bridge End or Martyr's End or even Church End at the Western end. To the north is the A3 and on the other side of that is the R.H.S. Gardens of Wisley to answer John's question. At the eastern end is the VOR/DME but that is another picture. At present the area is private land but with a couple of public rights of way marked with crash barriers across the runway (so no drag racing). There have been plans for a massive composting site here but that has been very contentious. You might also note that scenes from the Spielberg film Warhorse were shot here.

Runway Gateway

Runway Gateway

Just to muscle in on the act, here is a gate latch to add to the collection. The gate is on one of the public rights of way that cross the old runway at Wisely airfield.
