St Peter's Church St Peter's Church is product of the deeply religious 7th Duke of Devonshire and the architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, who incorporated some Norman fragments from the previous 14th century church in his unwieldy new building in 1868. Bess of Hardwick's sons, Henry Cavendish (d.1616) and William Cavendish (1st Earl of Devonshire, d.1625) is buried here. Joseph Paxton, the 6th Duke's head gardener and designer of the Crystal Palace, is buried in the churchyard. Also here is the grave of Kathleen Kennedy, sister of the late President J.F.Kennedy. Her husband, Billy Hartington, was killed in action in 1944 and she died in an aeroplane accident in 1948. A stone slab records the President's visit to his sister's grave in June 1963 a few months before he too met a violent end.
