Spon Street

Spon Street

Just around the corner from Hill Street is Spon Street where there is still a high concentration of Tudor aged buildings. Many of them are not original to the street and have been rebuilt there after being saved from demolition in other streets and a preservation order is in place to ensure their survival.

A picture of Coventry
14, 15, 16 Spon Street

14, 15, 16 Spon Street

In the foreground is number 16. Interestingly, it was always in Spon Street, but formerly on the other side of the road beyond the point where the 1960's Inner Ring Road cut a swathe through the street. It was a later example of this type of timber framed building in the 17th century. Next is numbers 14 and 15 here form a particularly attractive pair and are original to Spon Street. They would have been amongst the prime buildings in the street and has been magnificently restored twice recently - 1977 and 1985. In the 19th century it was the Recruiting Sergeant Pub.

A picture of Coventry
Spon Street, The Old Windmill

Spon Street, The Old Windmill

This 16th century pub was one of the few buildings to survive the Blitz in central Coventry. Mentioned in Hewitt 1756, it was said to have been erected around the trunk of a tree and is one of the oldest taverns in Coventry. The uneven exterior walls are wattle and daub and until recent years little was done to change its character. During the 1980s there was some modernisation and the central paved courtyard was roofed over and a wall removed.

New Union St., Cheylesmore Manor House

Dating originally from the 13th century, it once belonged to Queen Isabella (the wife of Edward II) and in 1338 was passed to her grandson, Edward the Black Prince. Many alterations were seen during the middle ages but subsequently the manor fell somewhat into disrepair. Between 1965 and 1968 the building was restored.
