Glencoe village

Looking across Loch Leven from the A82. In the background is Tom nan Corp and Beinn na Caillich slopes. On a hill Glencoe House is visible. Glencoe House has a rich heritage and was built in 1896 by Lord Strathcona for his wife, Isabella. He was born in Scotland but made his fortunes in Canada rising to the governor of the Hudson Bay Company and also famously instigated the building of the Canadian Pacific railway. The significance of Glencoe House extends to its famous architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson. Amongst his achievement was his work on the Royal Residence for Balmoral Castle.

Glencoe Lochan and Sgorr na Ciche (the Pap of Glencoe)

Glencoe Lochan and Sgorr na Ciche (the Pap of Glencoe)

This must be one of the most idyllic settings one can come across. The former hospital used to be the home of Donald Alexander Smith from Forres in Morayshire, the 1st Baron of Strathcona ( Strathcona is a Gaelic variant on Glencoe), who was, for a while, the governor general of Canada. He always been interested in Scotland’s most popular glen, Glencoe, that was owned by the McDonalds of Glencoe until 1894, when Archibald Burns McDonald put the land up for sale. He probably heard about the sale of the Glencoe Estate while working at the Hudson Bay Company in Canada from the mouth of a colleague who happened to be the son of Archibald McDonald of Glencoe. Upon taking possession of the Glencoe Estate in 1895, he moved from Canada to Scotland with his wife Isabella Sophia Hardisty. Even though he planted a Canadian-like tree forest on the Estate to resemble his wife’s native land’s environment, she could not overcome home sickness. They consequently moved back to Canada and a portion of the land was transformed into a beautiful park offering three different walking trails, known as the Glencoe Lochan Walks. Some visitors have commented that the area around the lochan looks like a miniature Lake Louise in British Columbia.

Glencoe and North Lorn Folk Museum

Glencoe and North Lorn Folk Museum

The Museum occupies what started life as two thatched croft houses in the 1700s. The origins of the museum date back to 1966, when two local ladies, Miss Barbara Fairweather MBE, and Mrs Rae Grant, set out to collect, preserve and exhibit articles, costume, objects and information, relevant to the history and social conditions of the Glencoe and North Lorn district for the purposes of education and interest. One of the museum's main attractions is the remarkable building in which it is housed. Mrs Rae Grant, who is now in her eighties and still involved in the museum, helped secure the thatched croft houses for future generation to enjoy by physically standing in front of a bulldozer tasked with demolishing them. We can all be grateful that she succeeded, and the bulldozer did not.
