King Edward's Gate Now only the west turret and spiral staircase of this gateway survive. In 1327 this gateway witnessed the end of a journey perhaps unique in the life of the monastery, for the Abbot had sent an escort to bring back to the Cathedral the body of Edward II, who was murdered in Berkeley Castle. Hooper Monument When the Reformation briefly reversed under the Catholic Queen Mary, Bishop Hooper of Gloucester was burned at the stake in 1555.
