Inner Moat and the Astor Wing The Astor Wing was built in 1903 to accommodate guests of the castle’s new owner, William Waldorf Astor. It has a magnificent billiard room with cavernous fireplace, an intimate sitting room with wood stove and sofas and panelled corridors lined with paintings. But it’s the moated castle, gardens and boating lake on the doorstep, plus the out-of-hours access to its grounds, ancient yew maze and croquet lawn, which makes you feel like the lord of the manor. Golden Yew Chess Set in the Tudor Garden The Topiary Chess Set is formed from Golden Yew and is based on the style of chess pieces used in the time of King Henry VIII. It was planted in 1905 for William Waldorf Astor. Standing in front of the chess set is an armillary sphere sundial dating from 1710. This astronomical instrument was used to measure the altitude of the sun, moon and stars, from which it was possible to estimate both time and latitude. Hever Castle from the Tudor Garden Anne Boleyn spent her early youth there, after her father, Thomas Boleyn had inherited the castle in 1505. He had been born there in 1477, and the castle passed to him upon the death of his father, Sir William Boleyn.
