Dane John Mound A high mound that was the site of one of the first Norman motte and bailey castles erected by William the Conqueror. Archaeological excavation has revealed that the mound was a Roman burial site on the line of the old Roman City Walls. The Monument on top of the mound is to Alderman James Simmons who gave the gardens to the people of Canterbury. Eastbridge Hospital of St Thomas Established in the 12th century by the Archbishop of Canterbury following the martyrdom of St Thomas Becket on 29 December 1170 in Canterbury Cathedral as accommodation for poor pilgrims visiting his tomb. The Eastbridge Hospital has operated as an almshouse for the last 400 years. There is the Gothic undercoft, the Pilgrims Chapel and the Refectory with its 13th century wall paintings. It is the first settlement of Franciscan Friars in Britain in 1224 while St Francis of Assisi was still alive. Services are still held weekly on Wednesdays at 12.30 pm throughout the year. St Peter's Church That original Roman church was rebuilt by St Augustine in the late 6th or early 7th century. It was rebuilt once more in the late 11th century. In 1448 Henry VI gave Canterbury the right to elect a mayor. The 'Mayor-Making' ceremony was held here at St Peter's church. A special rest for the mayoral mace and sword can be seen within the church. Many early mayors of Canterbury are buried within the church or in rhe churchyard. Tower House At the south end of the Westgate Gardens is Tower House, an early Victorian building owned by the City Council. This was formerly owned by Catherine Williamson, the first female mayor of Canterbury. After her death the house was presented to the city, and it now houses the Mayor's offices.
