Crowland Abbey Crowland Abbey (also spelled Croyland Abbey) was a monastery of the Benedictine Order in Lincolnshire, sixteen miles from Stamford and thirteen from Peterborough. It was founded in memory of St. Guthlac early in the eighth century by Ethelbald, King of Mercia. Crowland Abbey Crowland Abbey in Crowland . The town was captured after a short siege by Parliamentarian forces in 1643 and this appears to have been when serious damage was done to the structure. The nave roof fell in 1720, the main south wall was taken down in 1744.
