About Stony Stratford

The pretty market town of Stony Stratford is an ancient town built around the Roman road 'Watling Street' which runs through the middle of the town. It is well worth a visit with many historic buildings and coaching inns, and is said to be where the saying "a cock and bull story" originated as in the center of town are two pubs 'the cock' and 'the bull' both coaching inns frequented by travellers who would often tell far-fetched stories. This little fact is celebrated with annual story telling festival in the town.

In 1742, a great fire was started when a maid hid some sheets up a chimney in the Bull hotel. The resulting fire destroyed a large portion of the town, including most of Mary Magdalen Church, of which only the tower remains. Over 100 other buildings were also destroyed.

The river Ouse flows around the town and is crossed by a ford, indeed the very name itself 'Stony Stratford' is Anglo Saxon in origin and means 'ford on a Roman road'.
