Beautiful forest, with massive oaks over 500 years old, situated a short distance from Ravenstone, close to Stoke Goldington. Although almost entirely in Northamptonshire, parts of the forest spill into neighbouring Buckinghamshire. Once a medieval hunting ground, the forest today provides dense cover for a rich variety of wildlife and is a perfect place for bird watching. There are interesting woodland walks, rare plants, shrubs and flowers. Trees range from tall dark firs to lofty oaks and brilliant beech, providing a constant change of colour according to the season. During late winter there are carpets of snowdrops and crocus. In early to late spring the ground is a riot of colour covered with nodding yellow daffodils and vibrant bluebells, violets and fragile wood anemones. There are picnic spots and a children's area. Popular throughout the year, the forest is often quite crowded during the summer months. On a quiet stroll, early risers are often rewarded by a glorious sunrise, accompanied by a melodious dawn chorus that somehow seems to be the sweetest birdsong in all the world.
