Althorp (said Althrup) has been in the Spencer family since 1508. It has undergone many major changes over the generations and very little of its Tudor buildings can be seen now. The Spencers have served royalty in various capacities throughout their history. Although of not great architectural significance Althorp does contain a very impressive collection of paintings by many masters and high quality furniture including Chippendale and Sheraton pieces. Amongst the fine paintings will be seen works of Lely, Van Dyck, Gainsborough & Reynolds. In the dining room there are 54 mahogany chairs, all matching. This was,of course, the home of Lady Diana Spencer before she became the Princess of Wales on her marriage to Prince Charles in 1981.
