Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) was Lord Protector of England from 1653 until 1658. For the years spanning 1636 to 1647 Cromwell and his family lived in an attractive building of the 13th-century which once served as a vicarage for St.Mary's Church, Ely.
The Cromwell family are believed to have spent happy times in this property which still has parts dating back to the original structure. Since Cromwell's times the building has undergone several changes including its use as a public house which was aptly named "The Cromwell Arms". The building now operates as the Ely Tourist Information Centre, with the upper floor being entirely refurbished in Stuart style as it would have been when the Cromwell's lived there. An Audio-Visual display tells the story of Oliver Cromwell, his life and times.
This beautiful timber-frame building is typical of its period, it was purchased in 1989 by the East Cambridgeshire District Council who restored it to its former glory, preserving it for the benefit of everyone.
