About Chester Roman Amphitheatre

It is almost impossible to list the magnificent Roman treasures this town possesses. Its extraordinary Roman Amphitheatre is but one.

Chester Roman Amphitheatre, built around 86AD, is said to have held 7,000 spectators. It is the largest of its kind in Britain, and may have served as a training ground for Roman troops as well as an entertainment centre. Visitors will find the amphitheatre beside the Roman fort of Deva, at the side of which lies a shrine to Nemesis, Roman goddess of vengeance. In Chester's Grosvenor Museum, along with other Roman relics, you can see the original alter. The one on display is a replica.

This is a thought provoking place to be, it bristles with the atmosphere of Chariots and Roman Gladiators, making it an interesting visit for everyone.
