About Cholmondeley Castle

The village of Cholmondeley is famous for its fascinating, romantic castle, built in 1801 in the Gothic style. Built as the seat of the Ist Marquess of Cholmondeley, the castle is constructed of local sandstone and is surrounded by grounds originally laid out between 1801 and 1804.

The gardens at Cholmondeley are famous for their beauty. The showpiece of the gardens is the magnificent Temple Water Garden and the fragrant Rose garden. There are several other complimentary ponds and lakes, all with a rich variety of planting and wild flowers. Since the 1960's almost the entire garden has been carefully replanted under the direction of Lady Cholmondeley. At every season visitors can see a rich variation of year round colour in the lovely herbaceous borders, shrubberies, plants and trees.

Cholmondeley is alive with interest, with something for everyone, including a nature reserve and a rare breeds animal centre with a well equipped children's play area.

Plants nurtured in the gardens are offered for sale at the castle plant shop, which also has a good selection of gifts and souvenirs. There is an attractive cafe and for "al-fresco" eating several delightful picnic spots have been thoughfully set out.

Cholmondeley Castle takes part in the National Garden Scheme and holds many garden and other events throughout the year. These include out-door performances of Shakespeare, themed musical concerts with fireworks, jazz evenings, a vintage car rally and a country fair.
