About Lanyon Quoit

In this moorland area thick with pre-historic remains, this is the most accessible and without doubt the most famous of all the Cornish megaliths.

Elements, and acts of god have caused the stones to be but shadows of their former selves. According to local legend in 1815 it was struck by lightening and its 18 ft by 9 ft capstone fell. In 1824, following their success at Treen, the Navy came with a crane to raise it, but could only succeed by reducing the upright stones by half.

None-the-less, today this 5,000 to 6,000 year old monument continues to dominate the windswept landscape, it has an undeniable beauty, often the more you see it the fresher it looks, thus is its defiance of age and elements. The stones radiate when dappled by the setting sun - this surely is the best time to see it, standing stark and alone just as daytime is leaving its brooding moorland home
