About Madron

The beautiful church dedicated to St.Maddern is the focal point of the village. Interestingly, it was once the village church for Penzance, and its name from the saint for whom the village is named. The church font dates back to Norman times, but in spite of this the church we see today is mainly from the 14th-century. It is a wonderful building with an impressive tower and a Lych Gate built in the 19th-century as a memorial to those who fell in the Boer War. The church porch was also added at this time.

In the village pub visitors to the area will always find someone ready to fill them in on the myths and legends of the region, for Cornwall on the whole is shrouded in mysteries of Christianity, paganism and legend. An atmospheric tourist attraction is the village wishing well sited close to where St. Maddern is believed to have lived in the 6th-century.

A short distance outside the village, visitors can reach the Men-An-Tol stone circle, which is thought to have been a place of ritual in the Bronze Age. Lanyon Quoit lies on the road from Madron to Morvah, it is the best known of all the Cornish quoits and is especially memorable for its size. The quoit collapsed during the 18th-century, it was restored through subscriptions raised locally and is no longer its original height. It is believed that prior to collapsing it was possible to sit beneath the stone on horse-back!

Cornwall is full of natural beauty, not simply its fine coastline but it has a rich landscape full of fields where you can discover tender plants growing along hedgerows, and gardens were exotic plants flourish all through the year. There are lovely villages with quaint cottages, where it is often possible to tarry and enjoy a Cornish cream tea in the ambience of a cosy, heavily beamed cottage tea-room.

Madron is central to many unspoilt coastal villages, castles, gardens, mines and pre-historic stones, all of which are just a few of the attractions to be discovered close-by. For peace and tranquillity away from the holiday crowds, the village makes an ideal destination in which to spend a romantic weekend, or a longer stay to explore all this lovely part of Cornwall has to offer
