About Lanchester

Lanchester is named for a Roman fort - Longovicium. This is a six acre site, on a hill to the south-west and was built in around AD122 to guard part of the Roman road between Hadrians Wall and York. Stone was plundered from this site and sadly, little now remains.

The village is quite simply charming, There is a beautiful wide green which is lined with lovely old stone houses and to the opposite side is the Church of All Saints. It was built by the Normans using stone from the fort and has a four square battlement tower. The cool interior houses, amonst other treasures, a 5ft high Roman alter, unearthered by local excavations, now stands in the church's south porch. The church also contains some fine examples of 13th-century stained glass.

Lanchester is a pretty village, it is but 7 miles to the north of Durham and is well worth a visit.
