Coffin road to Ambleside

Heading from Grasmere towards Ambleside on the Coffin Route. The left fork heads towards Ambleside which I took but the right fork leads down to White Moss and across the A591 into White Moss Woods and the River Rothay which runs between Grasmere and Rydal Water. An area with plenty of paths still to be explored

Before the church was consecrated in Ambleside nearest burial was Grasmere so coffins had to be carried to Grasmere. Very rough track in parts and rumour has it that quite often boxes had to be recovered from the undergrowth!!!

Remember your shots of the Coffin Route- seem to recall a seat somewhere along the way for the bearers to rest. Judging by the pic, not an easy task at all.

I can well imagine the coffins ending up in the bushes, nice shot Dave, interesting narrative.
