Levens Hall is a wonderful Elizabethan mansion, which began life as a medieval tower refuge against the Scots, it was completed around 1586. It is the home of the Bagot family, and contains elegantly furnished rooms displaying fine paintings, exquisite panelling, ornate ceilings, superb Jacobean furniture and many other precious objects.
The gardens are truly magnificent, they were laid down late in the 17th-century by a Frenchman called Beaumont who had received training at Versailles, he had also worked at Hampton Court Palace. The design of the gardens has remained unaltered for over 300 years. There is a stunning fountain, lovely walkways, brilliant year round colour, magnificent topiary and a romantic rose garden.
This is a fascinating, stylish house which oozes with warmth and comfort of traditional English country style. It has a lovely atmosphere and is a joy to look around.
Scrumptious freshly prepared lunches and teas are available daily in the restaurant were you can also purchase a glass of wine or the famous Levens Morocco Ale, as well as tea and coffee.
There is an interesting gift shop, and most recently because of limited access the owners have thoughtfully installed a rolling DVD of the rooms open to the public. This facility is sited in the Bellingham Buttery.
Levens Hall and Gardens are open Sunday to Thursday each week from April to October.
