About Stonethwaite

Tucked away in a quiet part of Borrowdale where streams tumble down crags amongst a patchwork of old pack-horse trails, scenery does not come more beautiful than that which surrounds this peaceful hamlet in the Langstrath Valley.

This is assured walking country, with the Cumbrian Way and Coast to Coast walks on the doorstep. For those not willing to venture so far there is the attractive village to explore with quiet walks taking in little becks found close to footpaths leading off leafy lanes.

St.Andrew's church is a typical small Cumbrian church which was built in the 17th century. It is mentioned by writer Sir Hugh Walpole, author of The Herries Chronicles. The Langstrath Inn occupies an even older building formed from a miners cottage of 1590. This has a warmly welcoming atmosphere and is the focus of thirsty walkers arriving in the village.

Historically both Fountains Abbey and Furness Abbey are known to have held lands in Southwaite, eventually ownership was disputed, Edward I claimed it as Crown property then sold it to Fountains Abbey for the princely sum of 40 shillings. Whatever, we are fortunate to have such a lovely place to visit today, it is surrounded by Watendlath, Rosthwaite and Buttermere, with the historic market town of Keswick within easy reach.
