The superb position of this delightful market town high in the Peak District leads it to be sometimes called the 'Capital' of the Peaks or the 'Gateway' to the peaks - whatever you choose to call 'Chapel' (as the locals call it) one thing is certain, it is an exceptional town with many beautiful features.

Chapel is a well preserved, picturesque place. It has a lovely old church dating back to the 14th-century which stands on the spot of an earlier church built by foresters a century or so before. The site then would have been at the edge of the forest, thus the name, Chapel-en-le-Frith.

A wander around reveals much to admire. In the cobbled market place you can see what were once the village stocks and a medieval market cross. These ancient relics are surrounded by pleasant shops and a couple of inns. A short walk takes you to the church which still has its original sun dial. Today the church looks sedate and peaceful, but this was not always so. During the turbulent days of the Civil War, following the Battle of Ribbleton Moor in 1648 over a thousands Scottish soldiers were taken prisoner and imprisoned in the church. They were kept there for two weeks during which time there was a great loss of life. Inside, the church has many treasures, whilst the churchyard surrounding this lovely building, shows graves and tombs covering several centuries. From the church, you turn into Church Brow, a quaint cobbled street, taking you back to the main street where you will find a friendly tourist information centre with lots of information on the town and The Peak District National Park.

This is a lively town, there is always something going on, there is a town band and organised festivals are held. It is lovely walking country and for those who wish to spend a few days away from it all, there is a good selection of cottage and hotel accommodation.
