About Mapperley

Mapperly is set in spacious countryside to the north of Derby, lying close to the market town of Ilkeston. It is, to use estate agents "Jargon" a sought after village, being arranged along a U shaped road, with no passing traffic. It occupies a lovely rural landscape dominated by rich agricultural lands on which stand delightful farmhouses, and old farm buildings. In the 18th and 19th centuries this was an intensely mined area with pits being opened up by wealthy local landowners. Fortunately this activity ceased during the 20th century, and now there is little here to disturb the peace and rural charm of the landscape.

Visitors will find the usual amenities of Church, Pub and Village Stores. The church of The Holy Trinity is a modern church building from the last century, it replaces a former church of 1851 which was badly affected by subsidence caused by the mines. The modern church building is in stark contrast to the old village stocks which are still in place opposite the church.

An interesting feature of Mapperly is the church gates representing the village War Memorial. There is also an ancient churchyard with old graves and tombs.
