About Milford

This was once a quiet hamlet in the beautiful Valley of the Derwent. It is the place where Jedediah Strutt set up a cotton mill in the 1790's and surrounded it with new homes for his ever increasing workforce. Parts of the mill were demolished in the middle of the 20th century, but the giant stack remains a proud, tall landmark just as it was in Strutt's day.

The parish church dates from 1848, this is built in the Early English style and is dedicated to The Holy Family. The church contains many fine Victorian features and the window at the eastern end of the church has a memorial to George Herbert Strutt who was born in Milford and built schools at Belper.

There are several interesting properties around the area, these range from humble cottages once occupied by mill-workers to grand Victorian mansions such as magnificent Makeney Hall, now a comfortable hotel overlooking the Amber Valley. Of interest to railway enthusiasts is the fine example of a former railway sighting tower.

Inns in the town include the Strutt Arms, so named for the family who did so much for the town, and the Milford. The Mill House is a popular modern pub set in a lovely riverside location.

Milford is ideally placed for exploring the fascinating course of the Derwent River, its many weirs and crossing bridges. It is also suited to those wishing to discover the beauty of the Peak District National Park. Milford is also within easy reach of Derby, Burton-upon-Trent for the potteries, and Nottingham.
