About Butterleigh

Splendid skies rise over attractive Butterleigh which lies in a favoured position close to the banks of the River Exe as it tumbles through a myriad of fields on its way to Exeter, where it will finally escape into the sea.

The village is known for its splendid church dedicated to St.Matthew. This church with its plain tower of 1277 has been a place of worship for over 700 years, it stands in a peaceful churchyard setting surrounded by graves and tombs from several centuries. Inside the church visitors can see a font from the 13th-century, and the piscine in the south wall of the sanctuary dates from the same period. There is also an interesting poorbox of 17th-century origin which is believed to have been carved from an oak log and painted.

St.Matthew's was largely rebuilt in 1861, therefore most of the glass is Victorian, but the window beside the splendid War Memorial is by William Morris. Every Sunday, villagers are called to church by the peal of bells fitted in the 18th-century.

The Butterleigh Inn is a well known hostelry, here visitors can expect a warm welcome and join in lively conversation with friendly locals.

This glorious part of Devon is of a rich rural landscape littered with trees and leafy lanes which usually lead to farms and cottages. It is lovely walking country, and fishing for Tench, Perch, Rudd and Carp can be found nearby.

Butterleigh is close to The Devon Railway Centre and Bickleigh Mill. It is within easy reach of both Tiverton and Cullompton.
