About Meavy

Dramatic Dartmoor scenery forms the backdrop to this tiny, timeless village hidden in a fold of the moors. It is famous for a Tudor house belonging to the family of Sir Francis Drake and the 15th-century Royal Oak outside of which stands a shattered oak tree thought to be one of Devon's last 'dancing trees' around which pagan rites were celebrated.

The village can be found south east of Tavistock, close to the waters of the Plym in a valley which shows well the diversity of Dartmoor's splendid scenery. From Meavy there is access to Burrator Reservoir which has all the charm of an Alpine Lake and where visitors can enjoy trout fishing, gentle lakeside walks, flourishing wildlife along nature trails and pleasant picnic spots.

There is a lovely village church and, just a short distance away lies the granite rib known as Derwerstone Rock, from here there are spectacular views to the meeting point of the waters of the Plym and Meavy rivers.

The fringes of Dartmoor make an excellent choice when seeking a base from which to explore the dramatic wilderness of Dartmoor and the beautiful Devon coast.
