About Sidbury

Sidbury is a large village north of Sidmouth in Devon. Situated along the River Sid which rises at Crowpits Covert, running for 6 miles to Lyme Bay at Sidmouth. Sidbury Castle sits above the village, which is the site of an iron age hill fort.

The village church has a Norman tower topped with a spire and several other interesting features such as 500 year old font, a gunpowder storage room dating from Napoleonic era, and a Saxon crypt.

The actress Joan Hickson is buried i nthe churchyard under her married name of Joan Bogle Butler.

Other buildings in the village include a primary school, the Red Lion public house, a working watermill, a butchers shop, and Sidbury Manor house - a privately owned 19th century country mansion.
