About Slapton Sands

Rising above the shingle beach that form Slapton Sands is a giant granite monument that was presented to the people of Slapton in commemoration of all those who ' generously left their homes and their lands to provide a battle practice area for the successful assult on Normandy in June 1944' so reads the inscription. In those far off days, little did the good people of Slapton think that 60 years on leaders from many parts of the world would gather with war veterans to celebrate the famous D-Day landings that began the march to liberty. This monument in tribute to the town draws many visitors.
