Where better to see and learn about the creatures of the deep than in an aquarium suite set tantalizingly beside the sea. Well, here in Lyme Regis you can do just that, for the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium is set on the famous Cobb where you can feel warm sea breezes. It is just feet away from where the fishing boats land, hence when you visit you are in the midst of the fishing community and are likely to see crab, fish and lobster landed on the quay.
The tanks in the aquarium show a diverse range of specimens, some dainty, some ugly, but all are found in the waters of the deep, bringing to life the wonderful world that formerly has only ever been seen by those lucky enough to dive endless fathoms beneath the sea.
It is a strange silent world, the tanks are luxurious with rocks, shells and sea plants, and contain a vivid mixture of fish from around Lyme Bay. You can watch crabs, lobster, conger eel and all sorts of rockpool creatures and sea urchins.
The aquarium also displays a little of the history of the famous cobb harbour and tells of the towns seafaring heritage.
This is a pleasing attraction for everyone, regardless of age.
