Very little remains of Saffron Walden Castle, but what is here is well worth seeing for it is a fine example of a Norman earthwork motte and bailey fortress founded by the De Manville family. Later, in 1347, Humphrey de Bohun founded the stone castle when he was granted a license to crenellate.
Little is known of the castle's rebuilding, nor of its occupation and history. Most of the earthworks are now levelled, but there remains interesting lower storey's of a large keep and forebuilding which seem to have gained protection from the motte. Behind the rubble walls are traces of a spiral stair, central pier base and a well shaft. The main bailey shows the layout of surrounding streets and reflects the line of the inner bailey.
These evocative remains can be seen off Church Street in the grounds of the museum.
