a Picturesque Village in the county of Essex

About Wendens Ambo

This enchanting village with its unusual name lies at the western boundary of the county. Its quaint name comes from the joining of Great and Little Ambo in the 17th century.

The village is nothing less than charming, it has picturesque thatched cottages standing in the midst of pretty country gardens. A noted feature of the village is its church dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, which stands in an idyllic position close to a group of old cottages. The church has a typical Norman tower topped by a later spire. There is an interesting Norman doorway made with bricks from the Roman era. St.Mary's is mostly noted for its fine medieval paintings covering the life of St.Margaret - these were not discovered until 1934. Other ancient church treasures include a pulpit from the 15th century and a 16th century font cover.

Wendens Ambo is set in spacious Essex countryside, offering delight walks along leafy lanes, the usual village amenities and delightful inns.

The village may be found close to Audley End, with Saffron Walden being within easy reach.
