About Sapperton

In this delightful village, stone cottages huddle together along leafy narrow lanes and the ancient village church stands proudly by, surrounded by hedgegrow and trees, as if to keep watch over the village.

Sapperton was singled out in the early 18th-century by Lord Bathurst, as the ideal place to while away the summer thus, leaving behind the overpowering summer smells of Cirencester. Of interest is the fact that King George III opened the tunnel built to connect the Thames with the Severn, here in the year 1789.

Ernest Gimson and the Barnsley Brothers, followers of William Morris, came to Sapperton in the 1890's, they loved the atmosphere of the area and all three made their homes here where they worked together for many years. Daneway House, the oldest house in the village became the scene for their famous furniture workshop and showroom.

These days, not a great deal has altered, Sapperton remains an attractive spacious village where ancient and modern blend brilliantly together. It is but a short drive from Cirencester and close to Chalford and Stroud.
