About Farnborough

This town is listed in the Doomsday Book of 1086, then it was a mere settlement which over the passing centuries developed into a village. It remained a village until the mid 19th-century when a military camp was established at Aldershot. It's rapid development is owed to the strategic move of His Majesty's Balloon factory which was transferred to Farnborough in 1906, and it is now the home of The Royal Airforce Establishment's centre for aviation research and development. The town is also the site for the world famous Farnborough International Air Show.

St.Michael's Abbey was built in the town in 1881 by the Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III of France, following their exile to England in 1871. Both are buried in the crypt, together with their son, the Prince Imperial. The old parish church of St. Peter is quite possibly the town's oldest building.

The Hill, is the highest point of Farnborough, from here there are panoramic views over the town and surrounding countryside. The Hill overlooks Ship Lane which was on the old main road from London to Portsmouth.

Farnborough makes an interesting visit, it offers good shops, inns and hotels, and is within easy reach of Aldershot, Farnham and Guildford
