Church of St. Mary, Welsh Newton

St Mary the Virgin is a 13th century church that was presided over by the Knights Templar. It is the resting place of St John Kemble, a Catholic priest who was falsely accused of implication of the Popish Plot of 1678. His execution – which he endured with great dignity and composure – was met with dismay not only by Catholics but also Protestants who praised him as "a great gentleman".
