This high region of grouse moor and high fells crossed with deep narrow valley's was once a hunting ground of Saxon King's. It is a lush, lonely place, where there are no towns and only a scattering of villages. The only road to disturb the deep solitude was the moorland road from Newton through the Trough of Bowland to Lancaster. But other approaches are now opening up.
The forest is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, it stands next to the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A visitors centre can be found at Beacon Fell Country Park which provides plenty of visitor information on forest trails, cycle paths and bridle-ways. It also tells of the regions sparkling streams and rivers, and of the rich wildlife that flourishes in this beautiful upland region.
Within the landscape there are farmlands where cattle and sheep graze in sweet contentment. In the skies, hedgerows and trees, some of our most beautiful birds can be spotted and apart from grouse, for which the forest is famous, there are birds like the curlew, golden plover and raptors include our smallest falcon, the Merlin.
The wilderness of the forest makes idyllic walking country, off every trail and at every turn the fascination of mother nature is there. It is a naturalist and birdwatchers paradise. Even the uninitiated find the forest a constant source of amazement, enjoying the blissful serenity and peace of the countryside.
Ample accommodation can be found in the towns and villages surrounding the forest. In the countryside there are touring caravan parks with reserved pitches for campers. Inns are plentiful, there are a few shops but supermarkets can only be found in the larger towns and cities.
