About Hoddlesden

This spacious village can be found lying on the rural landscape between the town's of Darwen and Haslingden. The village sports a village shop, post office, fish and chips, village pubs serving a variety of ales, wines and food, a fish shop, and two churches.

The present church dedicated to St.Paul is found close to the school, this replaces an earlier church which exists mainly in ruins at the centre of an attractive churchyard where visitors can see graves and tombs from past centuries.

Hoddlesden's impressive War Memorial is located in the middle of picturesque Queens Square, where each December visitors can see the village Christmas tree and Crib. The green is a pretty place bordered with flowers, it gives good view of the surrounding stone properties.

There is a delightful reservoir, weir and brook, the old mill at Waterside is the home of the modern factory and offices of Vernon Carus Limited, a firm manufacturing surgical dressings. The mill, known as St.Paul's Mill is of historical interest and the centre of much visitor attention.

Housing is mixed, in the countryside around Hoddlesden there is a rich array of typical stone Lancastrian properties, these include terraces of cottages, handsome farmhouses, old barns and inns, all appear to blend in well with newer housing and the converted farm buildings of the village.

There are many important historical properties in the region to visit as well as a nearby textile museum and the line of the East Lancashire Railway, featuring both steam and diesel driven trains.

This pretty place offers a delightful day out in a village that is best explored on foot, otherwise it is ideal for a longer stay to explore the countryside traditions of Lancaster, or the cities of Blackburn, and Preston which sits at the tip of the estuary of the River Ribble.
