Abbey Park in Leicester is an attractive public park through which flows the river Soar dividing the park in two. The park was opened in 1882 and is owned and managed by Leicester City Council. It is approx 1 mile north of the city centre.
The park includes highly decorative Victorian features with its evergreen shrubberies, formally planted flower displays, trees, boating lake, and miniature railway.
On the western side, across the river, are the fascinating Abbey Grounds with the historic remains of the 12th century Leicester Abbey where Cardinal Wolsey died in 1530. Also on the west side are the ruins of Cavendish House, a 17th century mansion. Both Abbey and House are Grade I listed.
The park includes a cafe, pets corner for kids, sensory garden, tennis courts, bowling green and more and is ideal for a peaceful stroll or picnic in the beautiful surroundings.
