This is a superb, large Elizabethan house with a truly impressive roofline. It was built in around 1600 by Robert Smythson, with a gabled Tudor gatehouse and walled courtyards, the house was built as a home for Thomas Taylor, registrar to the Bishop of Lincoln.
The house is remarkable in that it has an unbroken history of family ownership. It has never been sold, each of its treasures reflects the personality and taste of successive heirs and family members and its atmosphere and ambience is that of the traditional "English" country home belonging to a gentleman.
Doddington is fortunate in that its stunning exterior has remained unchanged throughout the centuries. The interior was redecorated in the elegant Georgian style by John Delaval of Seaton Delaval in Northumberland, who inherited the hall in 1749 and much of the richness of the rooms reflects the Georgian taste.
From the moment you set eyes on Doddington Hall it beckons you closer and on entering you are met by a rich variety of furniture, porcelain, paintings and textiles. Even the outside is a match for the interior, thus the joy of Doddington is two-fold for it is surrounded by romantic landscaped gardens and grounds.
The gardens are a riot of colour at every season, there is a fragrant rose garden, lovely box-edged knot garden, topiary, sumptuous cascading fountains, vibrant borders, with the stately Flag Iris featured as a speciality.
In the Wild Garden visitors can enjoy rare wild plants and flowers, bask in the springtime glory of banks of rhododendrons and carpets of bright daffodils, some being Victorian species, and beautiful naturalised Crown Imperial Lilies. Features of the garden include a Temple of the Winds, water gardens and turf maze. A nature trail runs through woodland with fascinating old trees and wildlife, this is fringed by rolling farmland.
Christmas is a special time at Doddington Hall, visitors are invited to see the giant Christmas tree lit by hundreds of lights and on special set days in December you can visit to see the families seasonal preparations for the festive season. During the rest of the year there is a calendar of special events, and the Littlehouse, a converted coach house offers a romantic venue for weddings, dinner parties and corporate events. For the bride requiring something out of the ordinary, the long gallery in Doddington Hall makes a splendid, memorable venue for what is after-all a truly momentous occasion.
Doddington Hall provides a gracious memorable visit and should you be in this corner of Lincolnshire, it is one not to be missed.
